Cigarette Butt Box Project

September 19, 2009

Keepers of the Coast, is a St Augustine based 501(c )3 non-profit dedicated to local coastal preservation and clean up, in partnership with St Johns County Parks and Recreation, installed new cigarette butt disposal receptacles at the Fishing Pier on International Coastal Clean Up Day, September 19, 2009.

Cigarette butts were one of the top three items recorded during the 2008 International Coastal Clean Up Day and during our local July 5, 2009 Beach clean up, Keepers of the Coast volunteers picked up almost 10,000 cigarette butts on St Johns County Beaches. Keepers of the Coast wanted to do something about it! We can prevent this trash from landing on our beaches and in our ocean if people dispose of them carefully. To assist beach visitors in disposing of cigarette butts properly, Keepers of the Coast and St Johns County Parks and Recreation installed the first six of at least sixteen new cigarette butt disposal receptacles as part of the International Coastal Clean Up Day on September 19, 2009.

The first six receptacles were placed successfully in and around the St Johns County Fishing Pier. Wooden boxes decorated by local artists with beach wildlife themes surround the receptacles, creating pieces of public art for beach visitors to enjoy. Artists included Jean Drayovitch, Simple Gestures, Cyndi Reagor of Fountain of Youth tattoo, Dan from DFAM Original Artwork, Pete Markovic, and Heather Aguilera of Living Arts. The receptacles look amazing and visitors to the Fishing Pier have warmly responded. They’re working! We encourage you to go take a look at them – and continue to encourage visitors to the beach to dispose of cigarette butts properly. Keepers of the Coast hopes to continue to build, decorate and install cigarette butt disposal receptacles all along St Johns County beaches!
